چکیده

This article reviews recent work on the perception of color in cases where color change leads to scission, or a perceived layering in depth of the visual field into chromatic processes. A model is proposed that predicts under what circumstances a layering in depth is perceived. The model takes into account shift in color and change in contrast; it helps to describe the colors and lightnesses of surfaces seen through a transparent filter or through fog. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abrupt luminance change pops out; abrupt color change does not.

The present studies investigated whether an isoluminant color change pops out, indicating that it can be detected preattentively in parallel. The results of Experiment 1 show that an abrupt color change presented on an equiluminant background does not pop out. However, when the color change is accompanied by a small luminance change, it does pop out. The results of Experiment 2 show that the po...

Trajectory perception and object continuity: effects of shape and color change on 4-month-olds' perception of object identity.

Previous work has demonstrated that infants use object trajectory continuity as a cue to the constant identity of an object, but results are equivocal regarding the role of object features, with some work suggesting that a change in the appearance of an object does not cue a change in identity. In an experiment involving 72 participants, we investigated the effects of changing object shape and ...

Color and motion : which is the tortoise and which is the hare ? q

Recent psychophysical studies have been interpreted to indicate that the perception of motion temporally either lags or is synchronous with the perception of color. These results appear to be at odds with neurophysiological data, which show that the average response-onset latency is shorter in the cortical areas responsible for motion (e.g., MT and MST) than for color processing (e.g., V4). The...

Effects of spatial cues on color-change detection in humans.

Studies of covert spatial attention have largely used motion, orientation, and contrast stimuli as these features are fundamental components of vision. The feature dimension of color is also fundamental to visual perception, particularly for catarrhine primates, and yet very little is known about the effects of spatial attention on color perception. Here we present results using novel dynamic c...
